Theben and Sparta

2nd Attica Sea alliance

Quite quick, the Theban got again liberated from the hegemony of Sparta and united Boeotia another time to one State. Athens founded the 2nd Attic Sea Alliance in which Thebes and even the Tyrant Iason of Thessaly were members for a while. In 371 BC once again came up fights between Athens, Thebes and Sparta which ended in a general peace, but in which Sparta didn’t accept Boeotia as one state. In the following war, the Thebans defeated the Spartans in the battle of Leuctra. Here ended the position of supremacy of Sparta and got replaced by the Thebans. Out of this the Peloponnese Alliance followed signs of disintegration, the Arcadians with the help of Thebes and even Messenia established their one states. Sparta had to accept the hard defeat and made piece with Boeotia.

The seizure of power by the Thebans made Athens worried and they founded 369 BC a Defensive Alliance with Sparta and 366 BC also with Arcadia. Soon the Arcadian Alliance splitted again and the northern part formed a Anti-Boeotia coalition with Elis, Achaia, Phleius, Athens and Sparta. In 362 BC Boeotia won the first battle against the Alliance near Montineia, but their supreme commander Epameinondas got killed. The Theban power was strongly fixed on this one person and the war ended in a general piece. With this Thebes lost his power over Greece after a short duration.

Athens somehow couldn’t take advantage out of this situation, even worth. Many members left the Attic Alliance and also the resulting war to recover the members between 357 – 55 BC didn’t succeed at all. The second Attic Sea Alliance disintegrate, without touching the first one in seize and power. The social structures of City-States in the 4 Century, prevented powerful and huge unions. With the rise of Macedonia a lot of things will change and as a result it will stand the end of the Greek cities.
