The city is located in the northwest corner of Minor Asia in the territory of Troas. It seems that there were existing nine different Troy’s, which grew bigger and bigger with each reconstruction.

The famous Troy, there where the Greeks fought 10 years to defeat it, was the seventh one with the king Priamos. That this war really existed is quite sure. There were found big store pitchers and also tracks of fire, that shows a destruction of the city in around 1300 BC.

But the reasons weren’t those which Homer is telling us in the Iliad I guess, but more with strategically background. The last great ruler of the Hittites, Tudhaliya IV, spread a powerful Alliance between western Anatoly tribes and pulled back immediately to fight against disturbances in his own territory. Troy probably belonged also to this alliance and was located in a good strategically position, next to the Hellespont. The Mycenaean and their allies saw a chance to establish their territory in Minor Asia and started the war.

So they moved out and sought the city for years. As they finally defeated them, they got so week in their own territory that they couldn’t resist anymore the pressure of their own people, other rivals and foreign tribes. They brought about their own downfall.
