The Athenian society
Athenians were considered the ones whose both parents where born in Athens. Political rights were only for the men and the role of the women wasn’t really distinctive, she took care of the household. The citizen didn’t had to pay taxes, they paid in form of Liturgy, service for the people. Just citizen with a lot of money had to pay a contribution for social and cultural happenings or for the war. The biggest part of citizens were farmers and were occupied with agriculture, growing of seals, olives, wine and vegetables.
The individual districts were divided in the different working fields. In this 50 years between the Persian Wars and the Peloponnese war Athens developed to the highest and most important cultural Center of the Ancient world. Through the Attic alliance and their membership fees Athens had enough money to build up magnificent buildings and made other plans come true. Nowhere else Artist, Philosophers and Scientists had an such enormous sphere of activities as in Athens.
