After killing his mother, the Erinyes, the Goddesses of revenge, started to hunt Orest. Everywhere he went they were there annoying him, trying to drink his blood, and not letting him one single minute of peace. Besides, when he killed her mother he had seen his hands covered with his own blood. So much pressure turned him crazy and he ran to the Oracle of Delphi, since it was there where he was told to continue with the blood revenge.
Apollo advised him to go to Athens and to ask Athena for help. So he did and after a long trip he arrived to Athens and went to her temple.
Orest in the court of Athens
Of course, the Erinyes would not miss this even if they were more slow than Orest. They appeared just on time to se Athena arriving, who asked to listen to both versions. Then she decided to call a court and some old men and to go to the famous Areopagus to make a trial. The session started and the Erinyes presented their case. Apollo, who had came all the way from Delphi to defend his protégé, spoke in the name of Orest.
At the end, the result of the voting gave a tied vote, which meant that Orest could be exonerated from the charge. Some of the Erinyes accepted the result of the trial, the others followed Orest still for a long time…
