El Diañu Burlón

The character of the Asturian and Cantabrian mythology, does not help anyone, but he does not cause important damage either, although he causes great inconveniences. He is mocking and mischievous, takes the form of animals or humans for his jokes, but runs away if God, Jesus Christ, or the Virgin is named. Stories are told of farmers who lose an animal and, after searching for it, they believe they find it and take it home until it runs away and mocks the owner. If they carry him on their shoulders, when they reach their destination, he urinates on their necks. At other times, when the villager puts him in the stable, he is awakened at night by a loud noise, and when the door is opened all the animals run away frightened. When he takes human form he is often betrayed by his goat’s feet. He also takes the form of an abandoned newborn and no one notices until he has been fed and warmed up, at which time he escapes while laughing.
